BET Network Broadcasting COVID-19 Special

Black Entertainment Television has been a staple for decades in the colored communities across America. The network has always looked to promote positivity and support America’s minority races.

On April 8th the network continued its commitment to support minorities by announcing a special broadcast named, “Saving Our Selves: A BET COVID-19 Relief Effort.”

The special is a partnership with United Way Worldwide, and their hope is to create a relief fund to support people of color who have been heavily affected by the current health crisis.

The President of BET Scott Mills stated in an announcement on their website that, “The COVID-19 pandemic is savagely compounding the profound health and financial vulnerabilities many Black Americans face. Every day, there are new reports of how this pandemic is killing African Americans at much higher rates than other communities.”

The special is scheduled for April 22nd and will be co-hosted by award-winning singer Kelly Rowland, actress Regina Hall, and TV personality Terrence J.

There will also be special guests and virtual performances by celebrities such as DJ Khaled, Charlie Wilson, Chance the Rapper, Kirk Franklin, Fantasia, Melvin Crispell III and many more.

Scott Mills was also quoted from their website saying, “BET is using all of our resources – our capital, our media platforms, our relationships with the creative community, sponsors, businesses and charitable organizations to support our community in this time of crisis.

This isn’t BET’s first relief special, as the network has been committed to aiding minority struggles as they have held relief efforts for both the Hurricane Katrina disaster and the Haiti earthquake crisis.

BET is constantly striving to elevate African-American communities throughout hard times, and they can expect a high return in viewership as the majority of Americans are glued to their couches for another week of quarantining.

Voice & Nation brought this concerning topic to people on the internet and here is what they had to say.

This respondent said,” Anything that would raise money to help support people is definitely worth wild at this time.”

One respondent stated, ”It’s a great idea… I would definitely watch it.”
